Working with digital video
Supported Video Files:

Formats
FlipClips.com works with most popular video formats, but is especially focused on those used in mobile devices, such as camera phones and PDAs, as well as digital cameras and camcorders.

Supported file formats include:
3GPP or 3GPP2, MPEG4, MPEG2, MPEG1, Motion JPEG, MOV/QT, AVI, WMV, FLV, and DV.

Resolution
Although FlipClips can be printed from any resolution video, short clips (under 30 seconds) at 320x240 or 640x480 are optimal. Most digital cameras record at 320x240, and camera phones around 160x120 or better. Frame rates aren't as important, so you can safely record at 10 or 15 frames per second and still have a great looking FlipClip.

File Size
FlipClips.com currently restricts the size of file uploads to 25 Megabytes, so you may want to edit your video's length and, if possible, compress it before uploading.

Creating a FlipClip from still images:

FlipClips are intended to be used for movies, where flipping the pages reveals the motion. If you'd like to see a series of still images in a FlipClip, consider using software like Picasa, Photo Story or iMovie to select a group of photographs and apply motion effects to them. Suggested output is 800x600, with no music added. The StoryBook FlipClip size, with 150 pages, is ideal for these, attractively displaying around 50 images with their motion transitions.

Creating a FlipClip from online videos:

There are a lot of websites streaming videos that you might like to see in a FlipClip. If you have permission to reproduce the video, you can download it using an online tool like Video Downloader and then edit it with one of the following programs to fit into a FlipClip. Please keep in mind the recommended video lengths for each size of book before you upload an edited video.

Editing your video down to size:

If you're interested in editing your video, but aren't sure how to do it, there are plenty of great commercial software products available, like Adobe Premiere and Apple Final Cut. There are some great free tools available as well. Here are just a few:

Windows 2000, XP
Avid FreeDV (Windows XP)
Microsoft Movie Maker
VirtualDub
Macintosh
Avid FreeDV (OS X)
Apple iMovie
Linux
Kino
Cinelera

Cameras that are best for making FlipClips:

The ideal resolution for a FlipClip is 640x480, and there are some great cameras available now that will record movies at that resolution or higher. For a fun time, you can give your kids a toy camera and let them make their own movies for FlipClips! The video quality will be lower, but you'll save money and don't have to worry about the tykes dropping your shiny new Canon on the asphalt during a skateboarding trick. Video afficionados, however, will be more interested in the Canon S80, which records video at a whopping 1024x768.
